Television is Old and New: Modern and Postmodern

A constructive way to theorize television’s uniqueness in the broadcast/post-broadcast era, which at the same time allows for a discussion of postmodernity, has been provided in Karen Siune and Olof Hultén’s analysis of the media in general.9 They have usefully subdivided analysis of the media into what they refer to as ‘the old media’ – or media more associated with modernity – and the ‘new media’, whose features and functions are more attuned to the more dispersed arenas of postmodernity. Here, summarized, is Siune and Hultén’s structuring the relationship between old and new media:
